Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.
1 John 5:21 (KJV)
An idol is a graven image or representation of anything that is revered, or believed to convey spiritual power. The definition also extends to include anything a person revers to a point that it usurps the place of God in their life- to control and to direct them even when it is contrary to the will of God. This means it could be anything you bow to either than God which you will still follow even if it contradicts God.
Keep yourself from idols. God must be first and over everything in your life. Don't allow anything contest the place of God; this could be a person, a job, a property, a relationship or even your own ego. These things shouldn't be allowed to be God over you. They should help foster your relationship with God and not replace it.
Some people will not leave their job even for brief moments irrespective of what God tells them. They are ready to shun prayer, church, Bible study etc., if their work demands it. It has become an idol to them. Others have their own ego being their idol; it will not let them do what God's wants from them.
And finally, have no deity apart from the Lord Jesus and our Father in heaven. Never bow to anything that is called god and follow it's demands no matter the situation and conditions. All your reverence to a deity goes to the Lord.
2 Corinthians 6:16 (KJV) And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

I keep myself from idols. I don't bow to anything besides God. And only God's word has final authority in my life.
